New Labour Plans For A Colossal Freight Terminal On Our Doorsteps Exposed!!

Following secret negotiations by New Labour, Network Rail and Astral Developments, plans have finally been revealed to build a colossal warehousing, storage and distribution depot on the former Parkside Colliery site and adjoining Greenbelt and farmland.

If New Labour and their fat cat cronies are allowed to get their way they will dump the biggest freight terminal ever to be built in Britain onto our doorstep.

If it is not stopped this scheme will be the biggest man made disaster to hit the North West of England for years and will have a detrimental effect on our villages, towns and local communities for generations to come.

Traffic Congestion Nightmare!

Traffic congestion on the M6, the M62, the A49 and the A580 and throughout the surrounding areas would sky rocket.

Our local towns would be regularly log jammed with road transport paralysed and routine car and bus journeys would become a nightmare.

There would be dramatic increases in traffic accidents, vibration, noise and air pollution.

Even by the developers own admission there would be a major detrimental traffic impact on nearby towns and villages such as Lowton, Golborne, Ashton, Bryn, Haydock, Newton and Winwick. What they don't tell us is that the consequences would spread much further.

Parkside would become a magnet for thousands of Juggernauts daily from all over Britain and towns and villages throughout the region would suffer the consequences. Most seriously hit would be Wigan, Leigh, Warrington , St. Helens and the whole of Merseyside and Greater Manchester.

The Whole of the Site is Greenbelt !

  • The proposals would destroy a major stretch of Greenbelt and farmland.
  • There would be an adverse effect on sites of historical interests e.g. St Oswalds' Well, Winwick.
  • There would be a detrimental effect on the eco-system of the area and in particular on the wide variety of wildlife, flora and fauna.
  • The whole of the site, some two hundred and twenty five acres, is currently within the greenbelt. For the scheme to go ahead Warrington and St. Helens New Labour controlled Councils would have to ride roughshod over the rights of the people to the protection of our countryside.

No Guarantee of New Jobs!

In spite of vague suggestions of thousands of new jobs the proposals contain no guarantees whatever for the creation of new jobs or jobs for local people.

If past New Labour promises of new jobs in the area are anything to go by this is nothing more than a “con” to get the project through the planning stages. We only have to look at Stonecross Park in nearby Golborne. New Labour and their fat cat cronies promised us a park with lakes, swans and thousands of new jobs.

What we got was an industrial estate of mostly empty warehouses and the destruction of ninety seven acres of farmland containing woodland, ponds, nesting birds and other wildlife and only a handful of local people have gained a job.

Rail or Road Freight Terminal?

If the plans are anything like the original Railtrack proposals then what can be expected is essentially a road transport warehousing storage and distribution facility with ninety per cent of the freight arriving and leaving by road.

The proposed development could include warehouses in use 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, 52 weeks of the year with highly visible levels of lighting.

It has become clear that this is purely a commercial enterprise being marketed, under the pretext of taking freight off the roads, to improve the fortunes of New Labour's fat cat cronies without any consideration for the interests of the people or the environment.

Say No To Britain 's Largest Freight Terminal On Your Doorstep!

The only way to stop this monumental act of environmental vandalism is for people of the area to unite and fight a campaign of opposition to the proposals at every stage.

It must be made clear to the New Labour and other politicians on Wigan, Warrington and St. Helens Borough Councils' that to sit on the fence is not an option and that they will be removed from office in May 2006 if they do not oppose these proposals.
