More pertinent in the case of Phanagoria is the question of iconography, since while plainer black-glaze examples are current during the early fifth century (382–386), when the shape reappears late in the century (387–388 plus published examples listed in Appendix 1) the dominant iconography, of erotes and women, better suits a feminine, toilet use. In short, this scheme of shape analysis is inevitably a simplification of a complex picture, but applied with caution and recognition of areas of difficulty, it forms a useful, and most importantly, an explicit basis for diachronic inter- and intra-site comparison.
