A total of 127 reference workers from the food industry without exposure to asbestos showed lower levels of these enzymes than did asbestosis patients, and among these age and sex did not correlate with the levels of the enzymes. On the group basis, the levels of any of these enzymes in serum of patients with asbestosis revealed no correlation with the radiographic profusion score of small opacities and neither did their levels differ in patients having radiographically progressive or nonprogressive asbestosis, except for the decreased NAG level among the progressive subjects.

The preliminary results show that asbestosis patients have an exceptionally high prevalence of nervous system dysfunction; 17 percent of them had peripheral neuropathy; 17 percent had involvement of the central nervous system; and 22 percent had both peripheral neuropathy and disturbances in the central nervous system. These prevalences were clearly higher than those for the referents, only 10 percent of whom had peripheral neuropathy. Patients with rapidly progressing asbestosis had fewer nervous system disorders in clinical examinations than did other asbestosis patients, but they reported more subjective symptoms.
