Studies have shown that the first few minutes after a serious injury, an auto accident, or a heart attack are the most important. Who else was prepared to respond as fast as firefighters? There was a tremendous void out there that wasn't being filled before, and we filled it. Then, when the television show "Emergency" came on the air, that sealed it. Everyone just assumed that all firefighters were paramedics, which still isn't the case today. But after "Emergency," whenever somebody needed help, they dialed the fire department.
That wastes valuable time. The public 64 should know that we don't take our computer screen data for granted. We receive calls that a person's down, having a heart attack or something, and the family member panics. They don't know who to call, so they call a friend on the other side of the county. Then, that friend calls us, so we can be showing one address and the actual emergency is across town. Or, they're calling about a car wreck that they saw down the street on the way home. Knowing this, the only time we exclusively rely on the on screen information is in a case where somebody calls, they gasp, drop the phone, and there's no other way of finding them.

That's not the case. We do help, that's for sure. But on all these rescue shows, they only show the positive end to it. Everybody makes it on television. In real life, that isn't true. However, when someone does survive, it's a great feeling knowing you made a difference. -- Patrick Walsh, paramedic, Illinois * * * I'm really sorry that I didn't get into EMS when I was younger.
