The Community Action Party will hold New Labour to account both inside Wigan Council and in the community at large.  The Community Action Party will continue to expose the lies of New Labour in Wigan and will ensure that the people of Wigan are not deceived so blatantly in the future. We will use all available resources to make the Community Action Party the most active and credible opposition to New Labour in Wigan, St Helens and Salford .  “

______________________________________________

New Labour are under siege, desperate after years of being unable to handle the effective opposition of the Community Action Party they have accepted the fact that they are on the brink of losing control of “Fortress Wigan”. In desperation they put out press releases and leaflets full of lies about the Community Action Party and our councillors because they have no achievements of their own to sell.

The Community Action Party has forced New Labour to react to our exposing of their lack of action on all of the issues of public concern such as supporting Remploy workers, carers and the elderly and vulnerable in our society.

The Community Action Party have co-operated with the police and the community protection department to help achieve an overall reduction in crime in the Borough.

Community Action Party councillors have proactively helped alleviate youth and nuisance problems. We have fought for openness within the Council and its departments, questioning value for money and planning and engineering decisions.

Community Action Party Councillors have ensured that the New Labour Cabinet is held to account on their decisions that affect our everyday lives.

The Community Action Party is still set to take control away from New Labour in their heartland and bring honesty and integrity into our local politics. Public accountability has given way to secrecy and New Labour have hidden decisions such as the decision not to pay for school uniforms for those who cannot afford them, shooting our local wildlife and not providing the promised performance venue within the regeneration of the Wigan Pier area. In order to look as though New Labour are achieving something they undertake badly planned “flagship” PFI (Private Finance Initiative) projects which may leave us in debt in the future, without any significant benefit. Major road schemes costing millions of pounds which will solve no traffic problems and half hearted flower planting to try and win awards for themselves whilst destroying the hard fought for improvements made by Community Action Party Councillors.

Each election the Community Action Party will give the electorate the chance to change things for the better and ensure public accountability in the Borough of Wigan. New Labour will lose; they have no credibility or authority. New Labour Councillors blindly follow the Party line whether or not they actually agree with it. The local New Labour MPs are no different.

In this each local election and by-election a vote for Community Action is a positive vote for change, a change for the better and a signal that you will not be satisfied with the status quo offered by the three major National Parties.

NORTH WEST LABOUR PARTY REGIONAL ORGANISER ON FORGERY CHARGES

Barrie Grunwald appeared at St Helens Magistrates Court on Thursday 2nd August 2007and was charged with forging an election expenses form.

The offence - under the Forgery and Counterfeit Act 1981 - is said to have taken place on 28th May 2006 at St Helens town hall.

Grunwald is alleged to have made a false instrument, namely a declaration by a candidate as to an expenses form with intent to deceive St Helens Council's electoral service officer John Welsh. Grunwald, who was election agent for Councillor Marie Rimmer, the former leader of St. Helens Council, did not enter a plea.

The allegations were made by members of the St Helens branch of the Community Action Party shortly after the 2006 election. As part of the police's long-running investigation, Councillor Rimmer was interviewed by detectives at her home. Mr Grunwald was released on bail and the hearing was adjourned until 24th August 2007.

WIGAN NEW LABOUR CHIEF FINALLY ADMITS TO BENEFIT FRAUD CHARGE

Dorothy Abbott

GUILTY

MP Ian McCartney

SILENT

MP Neil Turner

SILENT

MP Andy Burnham

SILENT

Lord Peter Smith

SILENT

After a delay of more than five months since she was first charged Wigan Constituency Labour Party Chair, Dorothy Abbott, has finally admitted her guilt when she appeared at Liverpool Crown Court on 16th July 2007 accused of benefit fraud.

Ms. Abbott is one of the most influential figures in the Wigan Labour party and a close associate of Makerfield MP Ian McCartney, Wigan MP Neil Turner, Leigh MP Andy Burnham and Wigan Council Leader Lord Peter Smith.

Ms. Abbott is also employed as a Senior Officer in Wigan Council's Chief Executives department and is also the GMB union convenor.

Astonishingly Ms. Abbott is still on full pay by New Labour Controlled Wigan Council and the GMB.

That alone is estimated to have cost Wigan Council taxpayers and GMB union members at least another £50,000 in just over five months in addition to the £28500 that Abbott has admitted to swindling from the department of Works and Pensions over a four year period.

Both Wigan Council and the GMB remain silent on the issue and (as of 17-07-07) are continuing to pay Ms. Abbott in spite of her admission that she is a fraudster.

Also silent on the issue are Ms. Abbott's New Labour cronies MP Ian McCartney, MP Neil Turner, MP Andy Burnham and Council Leader Lord Peter Smith

Abbott's many other roles, past and/or present, include:

Chair of the Wigan Constituency Labour Party.

Wigan Constituency Labour Party election agent.

Chair of the Wigan Labour Local Government Committee.

Chair of Wigan Constituency Labour Party candidate selection committee.

Promoter of Wigan Labour Party newsletters and election leaflets.

Chair of Wigan and Leigh Housing Board.

Chair of the board of Governors of Mere Oaks Special School.

Member of the board of Governors of Brookfield Community High School.

Member of the board of Governors of Oakfield Community High School.

Member of Wigan North Township Forum.

Chair of Wigan and Leigh United Against Racism.

CHEAP DEAL WITH CONSERVATIVES KEEPS NEW LABOUR IN CONTROL OF THE GREATER MANCHESTER PASSENGER TRANSPORT AUTHORITY

Conservatives rewarded with Deputy Chair of the Bus Shelters Sub Committee

At the commencement of the Annual General Meeting of the GMPTA held on 22nd June 2007, with no party having an overall majority *  the 5 member Conservative Group sat on their hands and allowed New Labour to keep control of the GMPTA for 2007/8.

The meeting then had to be adjourned as New Labour's proposed allocation of seats on committees, which sought to give New Labour half the seats on every committee, was illegal and their revised proposal was also illegal.

When the meeting was re-convened the Conservatives voted for a third New Labour proposal which gave them control of the two major committees, “Policy” and “Transport Network”.

In return for their support the Conservatives were given a few miserly crumbs by New Labour, namely the Deputy Chair of the Bus Shelters Sub Committee and the Chair of the Audit Committee.

It appears that the Conservatives have sold themselves short and are neither ready nor fit for serious office in Greater Manchester.

Conservative voters in Greater Manchester must be wondering why they voted Conservative when they could have just voted Labour in the first place and cut out the middlemen.

Conservatives in West Yorkshire and the West Midlands are outraged with the capitulation to New Labour of their Greater Manchester colleagues because this shabby deal leaves New Labour with a  4 to 2 majority of the Chairs on the combined group of the six English conurbation Passenger Transport Authorities** which lobbies the Government on transport policy and funding.

Conservatives silent on Congestion Charging Consultation

The major policy debate at the GMPTA meeting was about the consultation process on the proposed Congestion Charging scheme – and not a single Conservative Councillor spoke on the issue.

Liberal Democrat Leader Councillor Richard Knowles re-iterated the importance of securing a massive £3 billion investment*** to transform Greater Manchester's public transport system. However, he said this can only be achieved if there is clear public and business community support for Labour's congestion charging proposals in time for them to be included in the TIF Bid at the end of July.

Community Action Party Councillor Peter Franzen said “I welcome a possible £3 billion investment in Greater Manchester's public transport system which after ten years of a New Labour Government is long overdue, but this should not be conditional on the introduction of congestion charging.”

Councillor Peter Franzen then slammed congestion charging as yet another unwarranted tax on motorists and the public at large and questioned the claimed investment programme.

He drew attention to reported comments by New Labour Government Minister MP Andy Burnham in the Wigan and Leigh press in which Mr. Burnham called for “a new railway station at Golborne with services to Manchester” and stated “Congestion charging on Greater Manchester roads is a non-starter without a major investment in Leigh's public transport.”

Councillor Franzen stated “we want real investment in public transport instead of New Labour crocodile tears, lies and spin. As Mr. Burnham should well know, his Labour party cronies on the GMPTA, including Wigan Councillors Audrey Bennett, Joe Shaw and Mark Aldred all voted against a new railway station for Golborne.”

*Greater Manchester Passenger Transport Authority (GMPTA) has 33 members representing the 10 district councils. 16 Labour, 11 Liberal Democrats, 5 Conservatives  and 1 Community Action Party.

** Greater Manchester , Merseyside, South Yorkshire, Tyne and Wear, West Midlands and West Yorkshire

*** claimed to be about £1billion from the Government's Transport Innovation Fund (TIF) and £2billion from the profits from Congestion Charging

PARKSIDE IS NOT A JOB CREATION SCHEME

CONTRARY TO THE CLAIMS OF THE DEVELOPERS AND THE NEW LABOUR SUPPORTERS such as the local MP Andy Burnham the proposed largest freight and warehousing development in Europe at the old Parkside Colliery site is not designed to create jobs for local unemployed people.

The development is the New Labour Government giving in to transport companies who prefer large freight transfer and warehousing sites within a small area of each region, making it easier for them to plan lorry journeys and transfer freight from vehicle to vehicle. The speculative developers Astral and other similar developers always prefer greenfield sites especially next to motorways, clearly the main consideration in the case of Parkside. The latest expensive advertising articles put in the regions local newspapers are an attempt to show the Parkside development in a good light, each time they come up with a new presentation the number of jobs that may be created, directly and indirectly, increases exponentially without any basis in fact and with no firm promises. The present incarnation of the plans (which will not necessarily be either those to be presented in the planning application or the final plans) now include additional rail sidings to all buildings. In all the previous publicly available plans for the freight interchange there was not such a great accent on rail, which, in my view shows the original intention then and now to be mainly road freight rather than rail freight.

The new proposals include removing even larger areas from green belt, the removal of an important motorway junction which will divert heavy traffic elsewhere and cause increased havoc on our local roads and at the other already congested motorway junctions. Access, by local traffic, to the M6 motorway will not only be further but more congested and difficult to get to, not a local benefit. As we all know, even the smallest problem on our local motorways results in gridlock, increasing travelling time for commuters, diverting lorries onto our already congested local roads, increasing pollution by both noise and exhaust emissions. How anybody can give even tacit support to these proposals is beyond me, vehicle weight restrictions on local roads would prove difficult to enforce. Local people and bodies, such as Wigan MBC's planning department and the Lowton and Golborne Township Forum, are engaged in putting in objections to the Regional Assembly's Regional Spatial Strategy which includes the identification of such intermodal freight exchanges. The policing of the HGV's using the site, being restricted to the M6 new junction, will not be either legally or practically enforceable.

The fact that the rail movements will be limited to the night time is something that we felt obvious from the outset given the lack of a suitable direct rail link. To be a real and practical rail freight development it would be essential to have direct mainline rail access at all times in order to maximise the removal of freight from our local road network. It may well be the claim of reducing some road freight by transferring it to rail is possible from these proposals but the benefits would not be seen in the North West Region, only in the South of England, all we will have is gridlock more often. If this development goes ahead and whilst work is in progress the roadworks alone will cause immense problems for local transport for at least two years and that is before the tens of thousands of new HGV movements promised by the developers arrive. Screening from outside view will not stop the intrusive and ugly sight of the development from local residents for miles around as well as noise and exhaust pollution increasing beyond reasonable levels. The power from below ground gas could still be used to benefit the local area and businesses without any further industrial development. The suggested use of bio-diesel (still 90 per cent diesel as far as I know) and bio-mass for power generation for the site would need further detail to allow examination of potential benefits and deficits.

As for green areas within the site having been increased in the latest Astral plans, without the development the whole site could be developed for leisure activities as green open space and could be used to create some guaranteed jobs with no adverse environmental impact at all. The number of open spaces available to the people of Wigan, Warrington and St Helens is constantly being reduced by housing and industrial developments we need to cherish the green space that we have and maintain and improve the quality of life for local people.

Grieving Parents Slam PM

The parents of soldier Jamie Hancock, the Hindley Green teenager who was killed while on duty in Iraq, have written an open letter which reveals their thoughts on the situation which lead to the tragedy. A week after their son’s tragic death in Basra Jamie’s father joiner Eddie Hancock, who has a passionate interest in Middle East politics, and Jamie’s mother, Linda, revealed their most innermost thoughts.

Mr. Hancock said he decided to put pen to paper when he was told that some of his views he had put forward relating to Britain’s involvement in Iraq could be damaging to the Government.

“A week ago our dear son Jamie died in Iraq. I hoped dearly he would be the last. As we can all see now he had company aboard the Hercules flying his body home – four more coffins. My dear friends, I don’t have a drum to beat about a Labour Government. I have in the past been proud to vote Labour. After all in our normal community it is a tradition of the working man and rightly so. I have seen the Thatcher era, a tyrant that devastated our communities, wrecked lives and turned family against family.

What I write is not disloyal to that tradition. I see the most fantastic, best selling brand name. It is Labour. We now have a group of people in power that have highjacked that much loved party, pillaged, plundered and assumed its identity and emerged as NEW LABOUR. People of this great nation, it stands in no way for the values we hold so dear. We have an administration that is depressive and oppressive. A party machine that is all spin and any dissent from any area is met with ridicule or character assassination. I see Reg Key ridiculed at Sedgefield for having a one item agenda, but to be told the truth by a Government is the absolute key factor in a democracy. It is led by a brilliant orator. It is said that he is sincere. If that is the case he must be the most naïve person in the land.

Parliament today is a self care society. The welfare of our nation is not a key priority any more. In its considerations we have a First Minister who has no qualms in standing at the dispatch box and telling the people who elect him a total pack of lies. This character, surrounded by a small group of desperate ministers whose only job qualification is to be a ventriloquists dummy. We have seen the American people give a strikingly similar character a positive rejection this week. I beg each and every one of you to put this destructive Prime Minister of ours under the same scrutiny.

Against all advice from informed strategists, top military advisors and UN weapons chief Hans Blick, this deluded man embarked on a war which was centrally a personal agenda. In four years we have killed more than 50,000 innocent Iraqi men, women and children. Initially liberating them, a further 600,000 have died in most awful circumstances, plus we have lost in Iraq 125 of our brave service men and women.

After all that he still deludes himself that he is a world leader. In fact he has made this great nation of ours a laughing stock. A man with no credibility at all. A man that is dead but won’t lie down.People of this great nation take pride in our national identity and help put the G back in Great Britain. Reject this sad man who has done more damage to this country than any Prime Minister in living memory.” Eddie Hancock

New Labour Plans For A Colossal Freight Terminal On Our Doorsteps Exposed!!

Following secret negotiations by New Labour, Network Rail and Astral Developments, plans have finally been revealed to build a colossal warehousing, storage and distribution depot on the former Parkside Colliery site and adjoining Greenbelt and farmland.

If New Labour and their fat cat cronies are allowed to get their way they will dump the biggest freight terminal ever to be built in Britain onto our doorstep.

If it is not stopped this scheme will be the biggest man made disaster to hit the North West of England for years and will have a detrimental effect on our villages, towns and local communities for generations to come.
