Leigh Central By-Election Result September 26th 2002:
In spite of pulling out all the stops New Labour saw their majority tumble by almost 50% compared with the May 2002 election result.
"New Labour's" massive campaign included numerous leaflets, extravagant election promises, telephone and door to door canvassing and even the support of the Labour Establishment including prominent national and local Labour politicians.
The Community Action Party almost doubled their vote relegating the Conservatives into third place with a disastrous 149 votes.
LEIGH CENTRAL (8,445) Peter Solinas (Community Action)392, Timothy Matthews (Con)149, Myra Whiteside (Lab) 904 Result: No change.17%
We wish to thank our supporters for their tremendous efforts which, in spite of overwhelming odds, have resulted in The Community Action Party almost doubling their May 2002 vote.
