Some are solid bodies, while others are smaller piles of rubble bound together by gravity. This space is occupied by trillions of inactive comets, which remain there until a passing gas cloud or star jolts one into orbit around the Sun. The Hoba meteorite, at 60 tons, is the largest known iron meteorite to have landed without exploding. Pythagoras (or the Pythagoreans) made a number of fundamental mathematical discoveries: that for a right triangle, the sum of the squares of the two shorter sides is equal to the square of the hypotenuse (known as the Pythagorean theorem); that the sum of the angles of a triangle is equal to two right angles; and that irrational numbers exist.

Amazingly, the solid nucleus of a comet is usually only a few kilometers across, far too small to see in images.

The fastest ones move at about 26 miles per second (42 kilometers per second) through space in the vicinity of Earth's orbit. Bits of comets break off to form this trail. Sometimes they appear in the night sky as a streak of light. A comet is a frozen ball of gas and debris that orbits close to the Sun. Although there can sometimes be a blurry line between categories the following definitions should help you understand the difference between comets and asteroids, why.

Those spending enough time under the night sky eventually will see a "shooting star," a streak of light that flashes across the sky in less than a second. Most showers take place on the same date every year—the Orionids, for example, are in October, when Earth passes through the dusty trail of Halley’s Comet. But usually those showers are attributed to dust ejected long ago and not dust being ejected right now. Students should read the passage silently, then answer the questions.

The winner of the competition, sponsored by OHB this year, traditionally gets to present his or her winning paper at both the Space Generation Congress (SGC) and the International Astronautical Congress (IAC), which are being held in September in Beijing, China this year. When comets get close to the Sun they heat up and begin to outgas, at which point a visible atmosphere or coma, and sometimes a tail, may be seen.
